Men's hair fashion 2012

What is the men's hair fashion in 2012 ?

Over the past ten years, we have seen the short messed-up hair styles and the different shapes of facial hair men had. In 2012 , the 80s fashion is expected to come back. We will see more of  medium hair length, side and middle hair parting, longer fringe and clean shaven face. Welcome back 80s.

Long or Short Hair

My hair is very fine, should I keep it longish or short?

Well, it depends on your head shape and size, your face features and the degree of hair thinness. Fine hair can be tricky for hairdressers to deal with. Only experienced men's hairdresser with certain cutting techniques and skills can deal with this type of men's hair successfully.

I have very thick hair, should I keep it long or short?

Again, it depends on your head shape and size, your face features and the degree of hair thickness. Thick hair can be easier for hairdressers and barbers to deal with than thin hair in terms of the different freestyle cutting techniques that can be used on thick hair.

My wife says I have beautiful dark long hair (down to my shoulders) but she always tells me it would look much better if it was a bit shorter to match my height, does she make sense?

Actually she does! Too long hair on men who are less than 6 feet tall does not look attractive. You can still have some length but it would look great if you get it cut nicely around your neckline and above your collar.

My boyfriend has very long hair and I like it but he's had it long for few years now and I think its time for change. When I suggest that he should get it cut short he gets upset. How can I make him change his mind?

Most men who have had their hair long for a long time usually get used to it that way. The longer the time they have had their hair long the harder it gets for them to get it cut short. Some men who have had their hair long for long time actually start to believe that getting their hair cut short would mean losing their "good looks" or losing something very valuable that can not happen again, therefore changing this mentality can start with something like:" Get it short for a change, it will always grow back"

Baldness

My hair is thinning on top but I still like to wear it in a ponytail. I was told it would look nicer if I get it cut shorter and get rid of the ponytail. What does Harley's grooming experts think?

First of all maybe consider hair treatments for your thinning hair. Secondly, when hair is thinning on top whether from the crown, hairline or the whole area in between ,it is highly recommended to keep the sides and the back reasonably short and tidy. Ponytail for a thinning hair on top or balding head is a NO NO.

My husband is bald and he prefers to shave his hair because he thinks it looks better shaved. I don't mind it, but sometimes I think keeping some hair on the sides and the back can still look nice! He doesn't agree with me though. What Harleys men's grooming experts think?

Yes. Bald men can still look good and attractive when the sides and back of the head are full of hair (reasonably short, depends on hair type) especially when it's trimmed nicely and shaped regularly (every 4-6 weeks)

What does Harley's grooming experts think of the pills and other hair treatments available in the markets that claim to regrow hair and treat baldness and hair thinness, any recommendations?

The results of taking these treatments and pills, regardless of their brands, vary depending on the recipient's natural body reaction to these treatments. There were two cases of two balding gentlemen who decided to take the same hair treatment (certain brand of well-known pills taken daily). Both gentlemen started the treatment together at the same time and Harley's grooming experts observed and studied the case for over two years. One of two gentlemen had a very remarkable improvement and his hair started to look thicker, darker and fuller noticeably after only three months so he decided to keep taking these pills .The other gentleman didn't have any improvement at all even though he kept taking these pills for over 8 months, after that he decided to stop taking these pills and started taking other type of pills (other brand) but he didn't have any improvement what so ever, he actually lost more hair!

I am bald and I have tried different hair treatments and pills to regrow my hair but I didn't get any result. I have been considering the transplant surgery but I am hesitant to go for it. I would like to ask Harleys grooming experts what they think about hair transplant, would it solve the problem?

Before going for the hair transplant option you MUST consider the following important points:

1. The size of the balding area that you would like to be "planted". Is it going to be fully covered with hair so that it would look natural or there would be still balding areas around that would be hard to treat now or in the future.

2. The thickness of the "donor" area (where hair is taken from). Is it thick and hair rich enough so that scars can't be easily seen or noticed in the future.

3. Possible further balding in the future to occur in the surrounding areas of the already planted area ,and that can create more problems and image distortion of hair and scalp.

4. The surgeon's skill and experience in hair transplant. Some surgeons are good in the hairline area while others are good in the top , middle and other head and face areas.

Facial Hair

I have been shaving my hair with razor for the past 7 years (skin) as I couldn't face the fact that I was balding and my hair was gone. I've decided to grow it back after I read your "Grooming tips". I feel good and my wife is very happy now that I have some hair she can grab! How long my sideburns should be?

The length of sideburns should go with the length of your face/ head. If you have longer head / face, you would look good with longer sideburns (taller, down to earlobes or above it) and keep them trimmed. If you have a small or short head/face , shorter sideburns would suit you better (just above the middle of your ear) and keep them trimmed.

My partner grew a goatee last 'Movember' for the first time and I thought he looked so sexy at first but few days later the goatee looked different and untidy! Why was that?

Men who would like to grew good –looking and tidy Goatees, beards or moustaches must remember that looking sharp with facial hair means trimming and shaping the beard, goatee or moustache should be done on a daily basis. Trimming and shaping facial hair can take some time before getting used to making it look perfect and balanced. Moreover, one must know his face features and the direction of his facial hair in order to get the perfect facial hair shape that suits him. Your partner either missed the shaping process he did at first, which matched his face features and looked good, or he missed the trimming process (the certain length) he kept then. Men's facial hair, whether it is a goatee , moustache or beard, can look really good when it's done well and taken care of.

Shaving

Every time I shave I get pimples, could it be because of bad shaving habits?

It could be. The razor has to always go with the direction of the hair and not in the opposite direction especially on a sensitive skin. The razor also has to be held, placed and moved gently on the skin. It is a very good idea to give your skin a break on the weekend without a shave for couple of days.

Waxing vs Shaving

There is a big difference between waxing and shaving . Men shave every morning using the traditional razor and the shaving foam or gel. Men have been shaving, using this process ,for centuries . Most men, especially the White Collar men, do shave every morning while others shave every second day or so. The bottom line is that the shaving process using the razor and the shaving gel/foam sounds and feels manly or associated with a manly masculine behavior. In other words, the touch and the feel of an unshaven skin that is used to be shaved using a razor and gel/foam is rather associated with roughness , manhood or masculinity. Furthermore, hair that is used to be shaved with a razor tend to "feel"  thicker on skin and darker over time (except on the genetically bald skin). The skin also becomes rougher over time after it had been used to razor shaving for a while. However, most men wouldn't mind rough-look facial skin as many associate it with manhood and good looks.

Waxing, on the other hand, has a different result and it is highly recommended for women to use on different parts of their bodies to remove unwanted hair. Waxing makes the skin look and feel smooth , clean, soft and healthy. Moreover, waxed skin takes much longer time to grow hair again on ts surface than skin that is used to razor shaving. Hair that grows on waxed skin stays on the same nature ( same thickness and color) over time no matter how many times you wax it. Waxing simply takes out the hairs from the roots and makes the skin feel much softer and smoother. Plucking is another effective way for removing unwanted hair . It is similar to waxing in terms of the healthy results for skin but plucking takes out only hair by hair in smaller amount on smaller skin areas like the eyebrows area for example. Waxing, plucking and threading ( removing hairs from the roots using cotton thread) leave the same results on skin; softer, smoother, cleaner and healthier skin that every woman love to have.

What Is really good hair?

I have recently watched Tyra Banks' talk show on Youtube and it was about ; What is "good" hair. In her show, Tyra talked to ladies and girls from both African American and European ethnic groups about their hair and their views on "good" hair. After I watched the whole show I actually didn't get a clear answer on the specific question; What Is Good Hair?! All what Tyra was trying to say, which I understood since it was a "Talk Show" , was that we should love and accept the natural type of our hair as it is. Sure , I agree with that, but still that didn't answer the question; What Is Good Hair?

Good hair has the following qualities:

1. Rich: in terms of density. (high density/large number of hairs)

2.Thick: in terms of single hair nature. (the single hair itself is thick and strong)

3. Full: in terms of scalp covering .(it covers the entire scalp completely)

4. Healthy and clean: a) no split or dying ends.b) Healthy scalp. c) Clean and fresh overall

So, whether you have an African, European , Asian or any other ethnic group's type of hair, if your hair has the above four qualities then you certainly have good and beautiful hair that you should be proud of . And, whether you decide to make it look straigh, perm, frizzy, coarse, wavy or any style/look you prefer or feel comfortable with is your personal choice and it is NOT related to accepting yourself the way you are or not! The bottom line is ; making your hair look straigh, wavy, frizzy, red , blue or pink...etc is a matter of creating a STYLE that YOU feel happy and comfortable with.

It also should be mentioned that using chemicals too much can damage the hair especially if hair is fine (thin/weak). If you use chemicals to create your preferred style/look, make sure you use it carefully by following these two simple rules:

1. DO NOT let chemicals TOUCH your scalp and if it does you can either just wash /wipe the touched area immediately to avoid any future side effects OR try to finish the process as quickly as you can.

2. Try to minimize the number of times you use chemicals
